18th-century suit

for the Handel Museum in Halle

Period: c. 1750, England

The 1749 painting, which depicts the composer George Frideric Handel, served as the basis for the reconstruction of the suit.

This is a commissioned piece for the exhibition ‘Men of Note: Heroes, Rulers, Heartbreakers’, which will be on display at the Handel Museum in Halle from 28 May 2026 until the end of October 2027. The garment will subsequently be added to the permanent exhibition.

The justaucorps and culottes were made from a brown-toned wool fabric matching that of the painting, woven at the renowned Huddersfield weaving mill in England. The trim was hand-embroidered with metal threads following the pattern of the original. The antique silver-plated brass buttons correspond to the Baroque style: semi-circular with a flattened top. A silk lampas was chosen for the waistcoat, to which our team applied a silver patina. The shirt is made of fine linen.

All parts were made according to original patterns from the first half of the 18th century.
The figurine we have created is based on the model from the painting by
John Theodore Heins from 1740,  which, due to the composer’s standing position, provides a good impression of his physical proportions.
