Doublet

of the Italian Renaissance

Period: around 1400, Italy

The doublet by Pandolfo III Malatesta (1370-1427), fragments of which are on display in the Civic Museum in Fano (Italy), served as the basis for the design of this Renaissance fencing jacket.

The new creation was based on the original pattern pieces on display and various paintings. The blue velvet bodice is reinforced and piqued overall, with the bust
modeled out with padding. There is lacing at the back, which allows greater freedom of movement when riding, for example. The tight sleeves are also laced, leaving more room for the forearms.
The strict overall impression is reinforced by the attached black bands and the high buttoned stand-up collar.
